Artist Statement
My paintings reflect my keen interest in the exploration and manipulation of the many facets of texture, shape, form, color, and design. I would have to say however that of all of the above the depiction of texture in all of its many facets is of the greatest interest to me in my work. The greatest compliment for me as an artist is when someone is viewing my work is to have them touch or want to touch a finished piece. It is difficult for me to comprehend not having someone interested in touching my work or that of any other artist. Art by its very nature is such a very tactile experience, and the desire to touch and manipulate it with ones sense of touch is a very normal human reaction. Perhaps my fascination with texture stems from my feeling that mans ability to touch in so many different senses of the word is one of the many qualities that make us what we are.
Non-representational too is the term which would best describe my work as there are very few images that on the surface at least that would result in the viewer definitely recognizing them lost among so many others. Many in the art world feel the need to title a work as a way of sorts of assisting the viewer to form their interpretation of what a particular piece of art represents or perhaps symbolizes while on the other hand, my works although titled, I would prefer given the choice to let the observer name them as they see fit and interpret them.
Art is a very personal thing both for the creator as well as for those who have the opportunity to see and to take it all in. Perhaps the underlying and most important aspect of my work is that each person can bring to it what he or she wants and enjoy and take it all in on their own terms. I suppose in artistic terminology the most applicable phrase to best define my artistic endeavors is truly and undertaking in: Art for Arts Sake.
